What Are Paper Coatings?

Paper comes with either a Gloss or Satin coating or Uncoated. This coating helps the ink sit on top of the paper. Gloss is shinier that Satin, but they are both coated. Uncoated paper will soak up more ink and be duller, possibly darker.

What is Extra Coating?

When we say extra coating, we are talking about an extra finish added to the paper to seal the paper. It can be varnish (matt or gloss), aqueous coating or UV coating. All protect the paper somewhat and help to not show fingerprints.

Do I Have To Register?

Yes, you do need to be registered to submit a quote. Quotes take a lot of effort, and we hope the person seeking a quote is a serious consumer.

What Does Binding Mean?

Binding is the type of book finishing that turns your single sheets into an actual book. Choices include stitching (stapling), coil (metal or plastic) and perfect bound which is the square edge you see on a paperback book.

What Is The Turnaround Time?

Time for a brochure or booklet usually is 3 - 7 days after you approve your artwork, but everything depends on the actual job.

I Want A Different Size Or Quantity?

If what you need for your print job is not a choice in the quote form, email us your specs and we will send you a "custom" quote.

How Do I Number My Book?

SELF COVER: Books that have the same kind of paper from start to finish including the cover are called "self cover". In this case, the cover is page 1, the inside cover 2, and the third page is page 3. Normally you would not put a page number on the front, inside front, inside back or back cover but leave those blank and start your first number on page three, calling it Page 3. SEPARATE COVER: Books that have different paper for the cover from the inside pages are called "separate cover". In this case, the first inside page after the cover is Page 1.

What Does lb Mean For Paper Weight?

Most brochures weigh either 80 or 100 lb text with 100lb being slightly heavier in either gloss, slik or uncoated finish with either no extra coating, varnish or aqueous coating. Card Stock can be coated one side only, with no coating on the back, or coated both sides. Coatings can be varnish, aqueous or UV. Magazines and catalogs can have the same paper throughout, or have a heavier cover.

How Do I Set Brochures For a Fold?

Let's do it the easy way. First, if it is a quad fold, like 8.5 x 16, divide it into 4 equal spaces, leaving about 1/8" between gutters. If it is a trifold, such as a 8.5 x 11 Brochure, do the followijng: For the FRONT: Divide each panel into 3.66", pull guides 1/8" on each side of the guide or fold mark. Panel 1 on the right is where your logo and name usually goes. The 2nd pane which is the middle and will become the back is also 3.66". The last panel on the far left is 3.56" wide and will be folded inside so just pull a guide 1/10" inside of the last panel to show where the brochure will be shyed or trimmed back to allow the fold. BACK: For the back, just reverse the above. And remember to keep your image inside the cut marks by about 1/8". If you want anything to go up to the cut edge, you must "bleed" it off by about 1/8" past the cut marks.

What Does Bleed Mean?

Either keep your artwork inside the cut edge by at least 1/8" or you will need to bleed your artwork off the page by at least 1/8". Nothing can land just at the point where the paper cuts, it must be inside safely or bleed off the page.

What About Making A PDF?

Making a correct pdf is crucial to a successful printing job. First decide if your project is full color, CMYK, Spot Color or Black and White. If it is black and white, save your PDF to be greyscale. If it is a Pantone spot color, make sure your graphics are created in spot colors, and when making the PDF, make sure to include Spot Colors. If you are full color or CMYK, make sure your pictures are saved in the CMYK mode (not RGB or indexed). RGB or Index modes are only for the WEB.

CMYK vs Spot Color?

CMYK is called 4 color or full color printing, and the inks are mixed together on the press using cyan, magenta, yellow and black to get the appropriate chosen color. Spot colors are solid inks that are either mixed or purchased in that particular color, and print as a single color, rather than mixing it on the press.

What Quantity Is Too Small?

We print sheetfed, not web or digital. Therefore we have a minimum quantity as you will see in the quote forms. Too small a quantity should be done digitially, maybe from a vendor such as FedxKinkos or The UPS Store, while huge runs belond on a web press.

If It Bleeds, How Much?

Pull a  1/8" bleed minimum, 1/4" bleed maximum.

What is Satin Paper?

Satin paper is coated but dull and not very shiny (as compared to closs paper). It is also referred to Dull or Matt.
